WPC vs Capped Composite Decking for Outdoor Projects

Wood-plastic composite (WPC) decking combines wood fibre and polymer for a low-maintenance alternative to timber. The important variable is whether the board is capped.

Uncapped WPC exposes the composite core to moisture and UV, which can lead to fading, staining, and mould over time. Capped, co-extruded boards wrap the core in a durable polymer shell that resists stains, scratches, and colour change, and carry the longer warranties.

For landscape, hospitality, and commercial exteriors, specify capped composite. Check the cap coverage (four-sided is best for ground-contact and wet zones), the slip rating for poolside areas, and the colour-stability warranty.

Where a natural material is required, thermally-modified solid wood decking offers real timber with improved dimensional stability and rot resistance. It is a different look and maintenance profile, and worth sampling alongside composite.
