Specifying Acoustic Wall Panels: A Short Guide
Acoustic slat panels pair a wood or wood-look slat face with a felt or acoustic backing. The slats diffuse sound while the backing absorbs it, softening reverberation in hard-surfaced rooms.
The performance number to ask for is the noise reduction coefficient (NRC). A higher NRC means more absorption. Reception areas, restaurants, and open offices benefit most, where hard floors and glazing otherwise create echo.
Beyond acoustics, check the reaction-to-fire class for the intended space, the panel format and rib depth for the look you want, and whether trims and internal corners are available to finish the installation cleanly.
Fluted and slat panels also work purely decoratively, as feature walls and ceilings. If acoustic performance is the goal, confirm the backing and the NRC rating rather than assuming every slat panel absorbs sound.
